Series

As I discovered through my focused study of Patricia Ford back in the '90s, one can greatly benefit from the perceptual education gained from the study necessary to create a series. While I create each painting to stand on its own merit, I plan to create new series as a means of focus and scale that can only be achieved through continuity.

   Automotive Series, 2005 to 2006

This series is a study of automotive variety through individual portraits. This standalone series was intended to have a finite duration, but no set path. The subjects were chosen as I happened upon them, and have no significance beyond themselves. I expect that future automotive series will have a more specific theme.

   Beach Series, 2003 to present

This series is an ongoing exploration man's interaction with the boundary of sea and land. As the variety of this interaction is nearly limitless I expect the series' duration to be extensive and thus it is without expiration.

Santa Ynez tryptic, 1998 and 2002

These three paintings, all 36"x18", illustrate three distinct times of day using Santa Ynez as a focus. I attempted to capture the cool tranquility of Santa Ynez in the early morning, the flat light of midday and the heat of the early afternoon.

Patricia Ford Series, 1991 to 1997

After reading an interview with Nagel in which he expressed his habit of focusing on only one model at a time for his paintings I decided to do the same. The experience was rewarding and my ability to perceive and visually articulate the uniqueness of a subject was greatly enhanced through the process.
