Customs

These cars have been customized directly by me, or under my guidance. Some are very mild, some are much more extensive. The sketches are for proposed or hypothetical designs.

I grew up around American iron, in car, tractor and airplane forms. Not until 2004 did I begin to seriously study modern cars as subjects for customization. Now I love both equally, despite their nearly opposite aesthetics.

My one hard and fast rule for customization is to try to ignore my personal preference and do what is right for the car.

   Scatha, 2007 to present

Scatha is a 2007 Z4 M Coupe, my track car, and my current endlessly ongoing project. For full details of her extensive mods, visit mymcoupe.com. Briefly, the M Coupe is a stupendous car, and Scatha's design process is to slowly whittle away what is less than perfect from the stock configuration while carefully adding new capabilities not envisioned for production by BMW. Scatha was featured in the April 2009 issue of Bimmer Magazine, Rezmoto and DansDecals.com.

   TrackTor, 2007

This design was entered in a Ford contest by BMS. The winner would get a new '08 Super Duty truck and then be responsible for modifying and showing the vehicle. BMS was not chosen. In hindsight I am unsure whether it was because BMS was a BMW-oriented shop or simply because the owner did not submit the design in time.

   AtlantaM5, 2007

AtlantaM5 is a well known M5 owner on m5board.com and I helped him decide on how to paint his new CF hood by doing some Photoshop work on his car.

   Kali, 2005 to present

This 2002 540iT was my wife's replacement for her Focus wagon. We immediately upgraded the engine, brakes and suspension similarly to Tiamat's, as well as the eurodash and seat heater/massagers. Audio is by BSW, installed by Tyrone "The Doctor". As the OEM wood trim was faded and scratched I wrapped in with a Chinese silk at my wife's request, although it was later replaced with paint similar to the Focus' trim for ease of maintenance.

   '59 Bel Air, 2005

This was a commissioned design for a 1959 Bel Air that was approved for production, but then abandoned when the car's owner had a financial crisis.

   Tiamat, 2005

This 2003 M5 is my daily driver. While it is pretty much a perfect car straight from the factory, there is always room for personalization and improvement. In Tiamat's case the performance mods were simple: Dinan's full S2 kit for an additional 70hp and much better handling. BMS sourced the brakes from StopTech and also did the seat heater/massager installation and eurodash conversion. I had a Total/CVT audio system stealthfully installed by SpeakerWorks. I changed the BBS RS-GT wheel centers to BMW roundels to give the car a more integrated look. It's the perfect sleeper; a comfortable family sedan with the performance envelope of a C5 Z06 and a top speed of 191mph.

   '02 Focus dash, 2004

I painted a few sections of my wife's Focus' dash with color-shifting paint over a metallic base. Partly this was to cover up how a replacement piece didn't match the originals, but mostly it was an excuse to infuse the car with a bit of her personality.

   '64 GTO, 1997

This exercise was inspired by my friend's '64 LeMans. I wanted to take that car's aesthetic, but in GTO form, and turn it into a Chip Foose-style design. I would point out that this was before he was on all the TV shows, and his current style is quite a bit different than when he worked for Boyd Cottington.

   '50 Buicks, 1997

This was a simple exercise in how paint can dramatically alter the style and vibe of a custom car. Even with the same wheels, which in reality would have been changed with the paint, one is distinctly more aggressive and the other is more sophisticated.
