GT42
Created targeting the guidelines of
MotorTrend's 2001 Design Contest, the GT42 was my entry in accordance with the
contest's challenge:
"Participants will be asked to 'turn the cars of the past
into the cars of today' by selecting their favorite defunct model or nameplate
and redesigning it for the model-year 2002." It won a semi-finalist
position in the "Amateur, 18-25 year old" category, and was displayed at an
exhibit during the 2001 California International Auto Show.
I was very upset at the judge's decision to not include my
GT42 among the finalists, as I thought the GT42 was a rock-solid design that was
avante-guard, producible and filled a much-needed market niche for Ford. Much to
my surprise, weeks after the contest was judged, Ford unveiled
its plan to build its own "new GT40", which had been secretly under
development for over a year before I started my project. Ironically, it turned out to be extraordinarily
similar to my design in style, structure and market placement. I find it
amusing that my GT42 design, which the MotorTrend judges so underestimated, was
the only design concept from the 2001 contest (which included several hundred
entries) to actually
be produced by a global manufacturer!
