"The goal of Formal Impressionism is to portray the
personal nature of a subject by arranging a specific combination of physical
attributes that reside within human perception of that subject."
My
Automotive Series is a specific application of
Formal Impressionism with two additional goals:
1) To impart to non-auto enthusiasts the sculptural
beauty of vehicles
2) To accentuate the passion of auto
enthusiasts, but using a less conventionally narrative method.
There are several physical details that
make my
Automotive Series innovative:
- Actual metallic flake in the paint, when compositionally
appropriate. As you cannot get the full impact of this from a digital picture, I
urge you to attend a showing or arrange for a private viewing.
- Gloss, semi-gloss, and flat sheens applied to specific areas of
the composition for added depth and realism. Again, the full impact is lost on a
computer screen.
- Tight composition creates greater immersion. Auto enthusiasts
can easily imagine the vehicle running off the boundaries of the canvas.
Non-auto enthusiasts can enjoy the shapes and colors in a more abstract sense,
independent of the need to be familiar with the vehicular aspects of the
subject.
- Specific vehicles are chosen and painted just as I would paint
any other portrait. Every subject is unique, every setting unique, every
painting is uniquely inspired.
